Ju Shardlow Poetry Collaboration pt2
Creature loves poetry nearly as much as we love illustration. So what happens when we merge the two mediums? Find out below!
Earlier this month we called out for illustrators to create images for a series poems by Ju Shardlow. We gave each illustrator one poems each and asked them to create their visual interpretation.
There are 6 poems in total, the first three were released on Tuesday (click here to view), this post gives you the final three with accompanying illustrations.

The man killed his own cock (California Birdfight)
On the news of fighting cocks
there was a news of death.
“Tulare”, rimmed the mouths
of men till even grit went deaf.
In maddening sun a scene of guts
and trash of glass was swift,
bundling arms of splattered notes
the mustangs roared and left.
“Someone got him to the grave?”
(a hat tipped to another) “Naw,
a knife in midst of flight
was brandished on the brother.”
At night the tale was networked
over starlit, linered ocean,
and in the lounge of youth-filled house
caused this brash commotion:
“Guns don’t kill people,
chickens do.
AHAHAHA
OHOHOHOHHOOO.”
On the news of fighting cocks
there was a news of death.
“Tulare”, rimmed the mouths
of men till even grit went deaf.
While saner towns with
righteous mounds (and PETA)
kissed their bets.

The Greatest Pizza Place on the Planet
After rattling slices at a thong,
Baz necks another quid vodka.
Dancing girl tastes the cheese:
“Put in a few anchovies,
I’ll grind till dawn.” But
Dawn was already grinding
the pepper, disgusted Baz
had brought her to Thin and Loaded.

People having sex after a heated motorbike accident
He stripped himself of leathers.
Scarred-on sinew patterns
with metallic paints, peels off
t-shirt underneath
to reveal real flesh.
He helped her with hers.
Ripping, the stench of sweat-soaked
grease never left the hall.
They kept their helmets on.
Luckier were two blokes outside
who found the keys still in the ignition.

Thanks yous…
Thanks to Ju Shardlow for allowing us to publish her poetry. This art wouldn’t exist without her words. Nor would it exist without the eagerness and creativity of all the artists involved, it’s so interesting to see how each individual has interpreted Ju’s words. We hope more than anything that it has been an enjoyable experience for you.
More opportunities coming soon!
Ju Shardlow Poetry Collaboration pt1
Creature loves poetry nearly as much as we love illustration. So what happens when we merge the two mediums? Find out here…
After the success of our first poetry collaboration in February, we have decided to embark on a second. Earlier this month we called out for illustrators to create a series of images to accompany 6 poems by Ju Shardlow. Ju has been a creature friend for some time. We have seen her perform her poetry on a couple of occasions and she was the poet behind 1000 poems in 24 hours, a project we covered for National poetry day last year. She is a talented word smith to say the least.
This project involves 6 poems by Ju, each illustrator was given a poem and asked to create their visual interpretation. Part 1 gives you the first three poems with accompanying illustrations. Look out for part 2 tomorrow. We hope you enjoy the show!

Brotherwood
One match saves
the others from burning.
Prodded, boxed,
quivering to the nib.
“Charlie did a brave thing
for us lads”
(Chinless is suddenly
the spokesman.)
And back they go,
shunted to the string.
The calendar chimes.
Wood-bath commences
once more.
This time, Johnny,
(despite his friction)
with stiff upper stick
shall spill his lot
for his brothers.

Inspired by David Shrigley
“Fight to the death between two snails.
Snail 1 is eaten by a bird
Snail 2 is also eaten by a bird.”
The churchgoers look still, perplexed
as the vicar bows, taking his fables with him.
Edging out the pews, they vow
to forget this sin-confirming tale.
The fable is recounted later in a smoking room
but by Lord Denson to a chair.
So it was lost in time pretty quickly anyway.

Part 2 tomorrow.
New Poetry Collaboration
We recently arranged a collaboration beween a poet - Ben Macnair - and 6 illustrators. Each artist was allocated one of 6 poems to illustrate, with no knowledge of the other poems. The results can be seen here: part 1 | Part 2
We are now looking forward to poetry collaboration number 2 and are in search of 6 illustrators to create their visual interpretations of 6 poems by the wonderful word smith Ju Shardlow… westywrote.blogspot.com. The poems and their accompanying illustrations will be displayed proudly on the Creature blog.
If this sounds good to you then get involved by simply tweeting @Creaturemag or leave a comment below. Submissions will be open till Wednesday 2nd March to give everyone a chance to apply. Then, with the help of Ju, we will pick 6 illustrators to collaborate on the project.
We will endeavour to contact everyone who expresses interest but it can get quite busy so please bare with us.
Why get involved?
One of the previous collaborators, Gilly Rochester, wrote this great review about her involvement in the first collaboration: http://gillyrochesterdesign.blogspot.com/2011/02/poetry-collaboration-for-creaturemag.html
Ben Macnair Poetry Collaboration pt1
Creature loves poetry nearly as much as we love illustration. So what happens when we merge the two mediums? Find out here…

The illustrators are from all over Europe, brought together under one roof especially for this collaboration.
There are 6 poems in total, all by Ben Macnair. This post gives you the first three with accompanying illustrations. Part two can be found here. We hope you enjoy the show!

Snowman
The Snowman looks pale,
like he has seen the Ghost of Christmas past.
He hears the stories,
of what happens to Snowmen,
how he can never have a holiday in the sun,
and each snowflake that makes up his skin,
is a ticking time bomb, waiting.

The Orange
She treats her heart,
like she does her
Terry’s Chocolate Orange.
She drops in on hard surfaces,
introduces it to the business end of hammers,
peels of the expensive covering,
and gives it away piece by piece.

Thanks to Ben Macnair for submitting his poetry, we were drawn in by his insightful words and intimate little stories. This art wouldn’t exist without his words. Much appreciation also to all the artists involved, it’s so interesting to see how each individual has interpreted Ben’s words. We hope more than anything that it has been an enjoyable experience for you.
