Thom says:
Following on from ‘Observations that stem from getting nowhere fast’, this weeks issue is called ‘Insecure Writer Syndrome’ and is inextricably linked to the questions and concerns I had the previous fortnight. It came into being because last Sunday I went to see Ben Folds at the Hammersmith Apollo. Ben Folds bought everything into focus, that is all that needs to be said.

Steven Says:
This issue’s illustration is of the same vein of Issue 14, which still stands as my favourite piece in this series so far, sketched elements mixed with bold graphic shapes and colours. It’s really important for me to have everything about how ‘the Inside Thoughts of Now’ is presented to work together, the writing, the illustration and the page layout and design, so that it looks as ‘finished’ as it would if it were to be in print.

Thom says:
Last week I had a few days when I was questioning the direction my life was taking, doubting whether I had the tools to build a successful life for myself. It all came to a head when I text Katy saying ‘I don’t know how to exist in this world’ and, whilst that sounded like a suicide note, it opened up the flood gates for me to reassess how I feel about the energy I put out into the world. This poem is what manifested from those days.

Steven Says:
I was rather pleased receiving the email from Thom that issue 15 would strongly feature elephants; they are awesome creatures to draw! This issue’s illustration focuses less on the emotion and more on the elephant itself but, I wanted to convey the questioning and confusion that the writing depicts by making this piece more layered and sketchy than usual. Recently I’ve been experimenting with bolder colours and trying to add slicker graphic elements, I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing but it’s always good to see your work evolving.

Thom says:
It’s about something I remembered the other day about one Saturday as a child. I was home alone with my Dad and, standing at the bottom of the stairs after lunch, I swore at him or said something horrible. I don’t remember why but I do remember that he was mad and I was punished. Recently I’ve been really focused on trying to remember tiny moments from my childhood that perhaps shaped the adult I became. I think this was one of them. I didn’t want to forget it again so I wrote it down and now I give it to you.

Thom says:
This week is about that moment as a child when you realise life isn’t everything you think it is. When you find that the things you believe aren’t always what they seem and that inevitably life will end up disappointing you at some point. My point was in the late 1990s watching ‘Breaking the magicians code’-I think it changed everything.

Thom says:
Its called ‘He ate because his hands were filled with food and its all about greed and indulgence.

No moral to the story.
No message.
Just food.

Its how I always feel after Christmas. Eating and drinking things I usually wouldnt because its the festive period. I’m not sure what my excuse was today, January 4th, eating Quality Street for breakfast but there you have it.

Thom says:

2011 is fast approaching. This is me trying to convince myself that I am ready to be even further from 1993.

I will fake it til I make it-eventually I might just believe it.

I am fearless, I am fearless, I am fearless.

Thom says:
Andrea Zuckerman was my childhood idol. Yes, she was a character in the original series of Beverly Hills 90210 but that did not make her any less of a hero to me.
She was editor of the school newspaper-’The West Beverly Blaze’ which I just thought was the coolest thing. She was Jewish, hip, well liked by everyone. She was super smart, proactive, passionate and she wore hats with flowers on. She was, in truth, everything I wished I was.

She was also Valedictorian when the gang graduated from high school in 1993. She gave a very poignant speech about how your friends will always be close to you regardless of distance and how we must be brave on the journey (The final line of which I have included as my final line).

Recently I’ve been thinking about the things I wish I was told when I graduated last year. Somewhat unrealistically I assumed I would fall into success and in fact this year has been quite a reality check. I wish somebody had told me something more and I wish that person was Andrea Zuckerman.

Thom says: I’ve gone back to writing overly sentimental, melancholic, romantic stuff. Its what I love to write – little moments drenched in sentiment.

Creature says: Drenched in sentiment exactly, look and read, it is rather moving, especially if you’ve been them. :(

Tom & Steven have tried something a little different this week. A limited edition poster…  50 available at £17 + p&p. Please email Thom to get yours.

Tom says:

‘Don’t live your life in comparison to others’ is something that I constantly repeat to myself over and over when trying to forge some sort of path in the creative world. I think living life in comparison to others is one of the unhealthiest things a person can do and yet we all do it every day, no matter our career or life choices.

I have this scrawled in the front of every notebook I’ve ever used and pinned to various pin boards throughout my house. Since collaborating with Steven this phrase is something that I have consistently pushed upon him until it has eventually become a part of his psyche also.

So, instead of having it scribbled on pieces of paper and stuck to bathroom mirrors and the inside of the plate cupboard in my kitchen we thought it would be a great idea for Steven to create a slick, minimalistic poster which could act as both a reminder and a beautiful piece of wall art. 50 available at £17 + p&p. Please email Thom to get yours.
