Artist Spotlight – #92 Guy Grimshaw

Guy Grimshaw-Smith

Artist: Guy Grimshaw
Website: guygrimshaw.co.uk

Who are you, where are you from?
I’m Guy, graphic design and illustration fresh meat. I was born in Kent, moved to Rugby, then to Nottingham and now I stroll around London.

What do you do?
I like to do a lot of different things, most of my time is taken up by design. Since graduating I’ve been working in a couple of different studios getting into the swing of the working world of design. But I love to illustrate whenever I get a chance or an idea, especially if it can be part of a project, although I always love side commissions and projects. I’d like to do some more animation in the future too.

Why do you do it?
I can’t really imagine doing anything else. It’s a great feeling the buzz of enthusiasm you can get from a project or idea coming together, I love using my hands and making things, I hope I can always do that.

Guy Grimshaw-Smith

How do you create these images?
The majority I draw out using my growing collection of black pens, and sometimes I add colour afterwards on the trusty apple. I used to experiment with pencils and paints a lot more and I’d like to revisit that style in the future.

Who are your influences?
There are tonnes of illustrators, designers, animators, film makers and even musicians I admire, it’s impossible to list them all! If I had to pick any one person I think it would be Oliver Jeffers. His illustrations are beautifully put together and have such a unique charm.

Guy Grimshaw-Smith

What inspires your work?
So much constantly inspires me, strange objects or experiences, odd people, good films, bad films, great music, old and new design and illustration, sometimes just conversations, mostly imagination! I like to exaggerate the truth in my illustration. Take an event, or a fact, and imagine ‘what if this happened…’ to give it some humour. When it comes to illustration I can be a bit of a big kid sometimes.

What do you like?
Good walks, being outside, great warm light, interesting people and annoyingly catchy music.

Freak of the week – Ruepert and the Red Wood Tree’s

David Litchfield
Artist: David Litchfield
Project: Freak of the week
Website: www.davidlitchfieldillustration.com

For this weeks Freak of the Week, I would like to do something a bit different and exclusively share with the Creature community my latest drawing for the band Rue Royale.

I have been working with this very unique band for a while now and in total I have produced 6 designs, all of which have a very loose narrative running through them. This latest installment is called ‘Ruepert and the Red Wood Tree’s’ and simply depicts the continuing journey of these three familiar characters.
I hope that you guys and girls like it.

Location:Santiago, Chile
Website: flickr

Who are you, where are you from?

Well, i’m Cristóbal Urrea, a freelance illustrator and a student of animation and digital arts from Santiago, Chile

What do you do?
I’m always drawing things that come to my mind, trying to make my illustrations just like i imagined it. Ah, and go to college fo finish my digital artist degree.

Why do you do it?
It’s a great scape from reality, stress and other annoying things. I really think that this is better than any pill.

Cristobal Urrea

How do you create these images?

Usually i draw a little sketch on any paper when a interesting image comes to my mind, then i mix it with other things, create a good composition and when i have a clear picture of mis “mix” of images, i start drawing the final illustration.

Who are your influences?
I have two kinds of influences, artistic influences and life influences, the first ones are Jordan Debney, Albrecht Durer, Alex Pardee, Dan Mumford, Salvador Dalí, James Patradoon and Dave Kloc, i spend a lot of time watching their work. In the second ones, Loreto Riveros who was my teacher (and a awesome artist) a few years ago, she taught me how to be patient, to focus my ideas and to never give up in my dreams, my other life influence is my father, for me he is the greatest man in the planet.

What inspires your work?
Almost everything, but animal anathomy and body expresions are really inspiring.

How does the place you live impact upon your work?

Well, here in Santiago i go almost everywhere walking, so i have a lot of time to think, watch buildings, people, animals and how everything interacts and mix together, like a huge blender.

Cristobal Urrea

What do you like?
I like cinnamon tea, robots, dogs, a beer with friends, beetroots and carrots (specially their color), take a long walk with music, sunny days, play videogames, anathomy books, tattoo culture and i love daydreaming.

What don’t you like?
I don’t like perfume, the movies where a dog dies (that also makes me cry), elevators, babies (but that’s because they hated me first!), scarfs, when my girlfriend sneeze (always scare me) and this is gonna sound weird, but i don’t like to sleep.
