Artist: Meghan Spurlock
Who are you?
My name is Meghan. I’m a 24 year old Texan now living in the UK.
What do you do?
I’m a jack of all trades type. Photography, Illustration, Graphic Design, Taxidermy, and lately a bit of animation to boot.
Why do you do it?
I usually have about 3 lines of thought going on in my head at once; it’s very noisy. But when I get involved in a project, especially creating something, it all calms down and I feel more at peace.
Who are your influences?
I try not to look at other artists too much, as it just messes with my head. But one artist whose work I’m always gawping over is James Jean. He’s a master of drawing and paint as well as amazingly inventive.
What inspires your work?
I find myself looking to older artwork for inspiration lately. Medieval maps and book illumination, mid-millennium art (decorative elements like grotesques, ceremonial dishes from the 1400s), older architecture, Mayan codices. And of course nature, especially the stranger aspects of it.
What do you like?
Spicy food, ferrets, 1960s music, and fixing things when they break.
What don’t you like?
One time on a flight to Texas the girl in the seat behind me was sticking her feet between the seats and resting them on my arm rest, which meant I kept getting the back of my arm stroked by a stranger’s bare toes. I really didn’t like that.
