Artist: Amy Crabtree
Who are you?
Amy Crabtree, aka Cakes with Faces.
What do you do?
Graphic art and illustration, mostly cute character designs.
Why do you do it?
It’s satisfying to see my scribbles all vectored up and colourful. My dream is to have my own cakey apparel empire, and I’d love to make a series of blindbox figures. I’ll be having my first artist stall at MCM Expo London at the end of October – come along and say hi!
How do you create these images?
I do a rough drawing by hand first, then scan in and bring it to life in Illustrator. It’s a great thought that vectors could be any size – a billboard size angry croissant….
Who are your influences?
Tokidoki , my graphic art idol. Anime and manga, with the huge eyes, and recently I’ve realised how much watching 80s claymation series Trap Door influenced me.
What inspires your work?
A lot of my work is based on food – I kind of wish it didn’t turn out like that! The Scott Pilgrim books have made me to want to write a comic book – as a start I’ve drawn some one page mini stories.
What do you like?
Everything that’s ultra-modern and cool about Japan.
What don’t you like?
Mushrooms and dogs.
